UK top school bans girls under eight from fasting, wearing Hijabs in class

Sputnik - Despite one of Britains top primary schools calling for the government to take a firm stand on pupils wearing hijabs and fasting, it is still left to be seen if there will be national guidelines on these issues.

The Sunday Times has reportedthat the highly ranked St Stephen's primary school, inNewham, East London, has banned its pupils fromwearing hijabs and fasting onschool premises. The school authorities said it shouldnt be their job todetermine policies overmatters ofsecurity and health, complaining that they consequently face backlash fromparents.

Also FYI, because this sch has banned young children wearing the hijab, asit apparently hinders movement then whats the schools stance onyoung boys wearing the turban? Does that hinder their movement too? Or is the agenda behindthis ban only focused onMuslims??

For instance, asthe school, which ranks high inthe latest rating ofthe Office forStandards inEducation (Ofsted) outlawed fasting inthe school camps duringsummer exams, moms and dads ofthe young Muslim pupils became infuriated pointing tothe fact that devout believers spend asmuch asaround 18 hours a day onlittle if any food. The school authorities were then held responsible citing that they were incharge ofthe kids health.

Arif Qawi, chairman ofgovernors atSt Stephen's, said it was a big issue assome youngsters atSt Stephen's and other schools were reported tobe fasting fromas young aseight or nine, despitegenerally accepted views that Muslims should only fast starting fromtheir teens. He said the same concerns headscarves. It should not be our decision. It is unfair toteachers and very unfair togovernors. We are unpaid. Why should we get the backlash?" Qawi asked rhetorically.

It earlier emerged that Ofsted recommended UK educational inspectors toquestion Muslim primary school girls if they are wearing a Hijab a move condemned as "kneejerk, discriminatory and institutionally racist" byroughly over1,000 teachers, academics and faith leaders. The move came amida string ofevents followingthe scandalous so-called "Trojan horse" plot, which turned outto be fake, butraised a lot ofcontroversy arounda possibility offomenting extremism inBritish schools.
