US likely took course to demolish Iran nuclear deal - Russia's Deputy FM

Sputnik- Russia, as well as the European Union, remains committed to the Iran nuclear deal, despite the recent US waiver of sanctions against the country.

Moscow would oppose any attempts toundermine the existing nuclear agreement betweenP5+1 countries and Iran, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has stated.

"The JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction] cannot be amended and we will oppose any attempts tohamper it," Ryabkov said.

The minister went onby saying that Trump's move raises questions concerning his negotiability oninternational issues, adding that Moscow will insistently explain toWashington the viciousness ofits sanction policy towardsboth Tehran and Pyongyang.
"We have a very negative stance onyesterday's decisions and statements announced byWashington, our worst expectations are coming true," Ryabkov said commenting onTrump's words, saying that the US thus demonstrate their preference forthe use ofpower tosolve issues.

The diplomat added that there was no sense inoverestimating Trump's decision onwaiving the sanctions, asthe United States was seeking toundermine the JCPOA and is reinforcing a categorical approach toIran-related issues.
"The prospect ofthe US withdrawal fromthe Iran deal will deliver a very serious blow tothe whole system ofinternational agreements and tothe enhancing ofthe nuclear non-proliferation regime," Ryabkov said.

The statement was made inthe wake ofUS President Donald Trump's announcement onJanuary 12 ofhis decision towaive sanctions onIran asrequired bythe JCPOA, also known asthe Iran nuclear deal. Trump, however, specified it would be the last time he signs the waiver unless the deal is modified.

This move follows the common path the US president took inrelation tothe Islamic Republic ever sincehis election campaign. When elected, he reaffirmed opposition tothe deal officially inlate October 2017, refusing tore-certify it and accusingTehranofviolating the spirit ofthe agreement.

However, the president still does not contest Tehran's compliance withthe deal atthe international level, while atthe same time not excluding the possibility ofwithdrawing fromthe deal if the agreement is not improved. OtherJCPOA signatories havecalled onthe United Statestocomply withthe agreement's provisions, saying that the deal had yielded results and was non-negotiable.
