UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Iran



Sputnik News - The UN Security Council will meet Friday afternoon to discuss the crisis in Iran after the United States asked the body to address deadly protests there, a source told Sputnik.



"The UNSC meeting is scheduled for3 p.m. [20:00GMT] onFriday and will be held inan open format," the source said.


The Council's daily program forFriday, published onits website, shows the 15-nation body would meet inthe afternoon todiscuss the "situation inthe Middle East."

US Ambassador tothe UN Nikki Haley told reporters Tuesday she would seek an emergency UN meeting inNew York City and atthe UN human rights agency inGeneva.

Nikki Haley has said that Fridays emergency meeting onIran protests would try toprevent Syria atrocities fromrepeating inIran, ina statement bythe US mission.
"Tomorrow the UN Security Council will discuss the troubling and dangerous situation inIran. The world has witnessed the horrors that have taken place inSyria We must not let that happen inIran," Haley said.


Haley argued inthe statement that what Washington sees asa crackdown onprotesters was a matter of "international peace and security." She said it would be telling if any country were tooppose the UN having this discussion.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert warned earlier onThursday that Washington had ample means tohold those responsible forthe violent crackdown on protesters inIran accountable.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik the US call foran urgent UN meeting onIran's domestic affairs was "harmful and destructive." He argued that it was not UN's role asa watchdog ofinternational peace todiscuss Iran's domestic issues.

In the pastweek, the Islamic Republic has seen the largest popular unrest innearly a decade. Protests began overprice hikes and unemployment butthen turned tobroader issues likethe clerical rule. At least 20 people have reportedly been killed and 450 have been detained.
