Iran’s Team Melli to move up two spots in latest FIFA rankings



Press TV - The Iran men’s national soccer team, domestically known as Team Melli, is going to climb two positions in the latest edition of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) rankings to land in the 32nd spot in the world.

According to the latest monthly rankings which are to be released by the world’s soccer governing body on November 23, the Iranian team has maintained its position as the best Asian soccer team.

Other Asian teams include Australia, which has climbed up four places to the 39th slot in the latest FIFA rankings. The Australian national soccer team, officially nicknamed the Socceroos, is followed by Japan, which plunged ten positions to occupy the 54th spot.

Germany will stay top of the FIFA world rankings. The other top four teams remain unchanged for the second month in a row with Brazil, Portugal, Argentina and Belgium in the second to fifth places.

On November 13, Team Melli beat the Venezuela national football team 1-0 at t the end of a match staged at the empty Goffertstadion stadium in the central eastern Dutch city of Nijmegen.

Four days earlier, Iran men's national football team had put its abilities to the test before starting own campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and managed to beat the Panamanian outfit, nicknamed Los Canaleros (The Canal Men) 2-1  at the end of a match staged in Graz, which is the second-largest city in Austria after the capital Vienna.

The Iran national football team defeated Uzbekistan 2-0 at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on June 12, and became the first Asian team - and the third squad after Brazil and hosts Russia - to secure its place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Sardar Azmoun opened the scoring for the host team in the 23rd minute.

Mehdi Taremi found the back of the net from inside the area in the 88th minute, and finished off the White Wolves.

This is the second time in a row that Team Melli has won the ticket for the FIFA World Cup finals under the tutelage of its 64-year-old Portuguese head coach Carlos Queiroz.
