'We saw homes collapse': Survivors tell of terrifying moment earthquake hit Iran



Sputnik - In the Kermanshah region of Iran, the area which was worst affected by the deadly earthquake which struck close to the border of Iraq and Iran, survivors have shared with Sputnik their recollections of the terrifying moment when the earthquake hit.




A devastatingearthquakewhich struck eastern Iraq and western Iran onSunday evening has claimed the lives ofat least 445 people andinjuredover7,000, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported onMonday.

According tothe European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake consisted oftwo seismic events one afteranother; the first had a magnitude of7.2 onthe Richter scale, the second measured 7.3.

?The worst-affected region ofIranwas Kermanshah Province. The earthquake's epicenter was located 32km tothe north ofthe town ofSarpol-e Zahab. In affected areas, field hospitals have been set upto provide people withthe necessary food, warm clothes and fuel. The governor ofKermanshah has declared a three-day period ofmourning forthe victims ofthe earthquake.

?Madjid, a survivor ofthe disaster, told Sputnik Iran how his life changed inan instant.

?"After work, I sat onthe couch and then suddenly felt it began tomove underneathme. I thought that it just seemed that way tome, butwhen I looked atthe ceiling, I saw the chandelier swinging," Madjid recalled.

"I quickly jumped outof the room and heard the neighbors screaming; they had run outof their house. I took my five-year-old daughter inmy arms, and my wife and I went downthe stairs. The earthquake was so strong that it was difficult towalk onsome ofthe stairs."

Shabnam, a student atKermanshah University, is fromSarpol-e Zahab. When the earthquake happened, he immediately phoned relatives tocheck they were safe.

"I quickly called my family inSarpol-e-Zahab. After several attempts, I managed toget throughand talk withmy family. Fortunately, they were not athome when the earthquake happened," Shabnam said.

"They said they saw withtheir own eyes how two houses collapsed," he added.

Mohammed is also fromSarpol-e-Zahab, and now lives inKermanshah. He was ata lecture atthe time ofthe earthquake. He told Sputnik that he has been trying tocall his friend inSarpol-e-Zahab, tono avail.

"We were inthe auditorium, suddenly everything began toshake. It was shaking so hard that the TV and figurines onthe table fell tothe floor. We heard loud screams all around, I tried toquickly get outof the room. Everybody was gathered ina panic inthe street, and we learned that an earthquake occurred inthe west ofIran," Mohammed said.
