Iranian analysts shed light on Putin, Rouhani upcoming meeting in Iran

Sputnik - On November 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay an official visit to Iran. The key issues to be discussed with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will be the situation in the Middle East and the bilateral relations of the two nations. On the eve of the visit, Iranian political analysts told Sputnik what other topics might be on the agenda.

The priority issue should be the joint opposition toUS intentions inthe Middle East, aswell astheir expansionist policies inSyria and Iraq, according toAfife Abedi, a member ofthe research group specializing onthe Eurasian region atthe Scientific Center forStrategic Studies forAdvisability ofthe Islamic Republic ofIran.

I believe that one ofthe important topics that both Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani should pay special attention toand activelypromote initiativesinthis direction inthe future is the issue ofour common position oncountering the United States. After all, it is the US that is currently pursuing an active policy ofsanctions againstour states, lobbied inthe US Congress. In my opinion, such aggression onpart ofWashington againstTehran and Moscow shows that the US authorities want toweaken our countries, Abedi said.

He further said that the US continues tocarry outdestructive policiesinthe Middle East, inparticular inSyria. He added that it was the strengthening ofcooperation betweenRussia and Iran inSyria that marked the turning point inthe complex military conflict, so mutual cooperation must continue.

According toAbedi there have been attempts toprevent this strengthening ofcooperation betweenthe two countries inthe region.
Therefore, Iran and Russia, asguarantors ofpeace and stability inthis whole complex process must actively oppose all these ambitious plans ofthe US and its allies, the analyst said.

Ahmad Vahshiteh, a specialist onRussian-Iranian relations and editor-in-chief ofRussia Viewer, believes that Vladimir Putin will pay attention tocloser cooperation betweenthe two countries inthe situation ofSyria not only inthe military sphere, butalso inthe reconstruction ofthe war-torn country.

In addition, there is the problem ofthe independence ofIraqi Kurdistan, which also should not be left withoutattention. Russia and Iran play a significant role inthis process, the specialist said.

In turn, Dr. Hamid Reza Azizi, a senior researcher atthe Center forthe Study ofIran and Eurasia (IRAS) and senior lecturer atthe Department ofRegional Studies atthe University ofShahid Behestti, hopes that the Russian leader will not ignore issues ofcooperation betweenthe countries inthe Caspian Sea and will highlight the issues regarding the North-South transport corridor.
"It is known that Vladimir Putin's visit is timed tothe meeting ofthe presidents ofthe three states: Russia,Iranand Azerbaijan. Therefore, it would be good if the issues ofthe region where the interests ofthese countries are represented are addressed, such asthe problem ofthe legal status ofthe Caspian Sea and all the issues arising fromit, Azizi said.

He also spoke aboutthe need toaddress the interaction ofIran, Russia and Azerbaijan withinthe framework ofactivation ofthe North-South transport corridor.

As forthe bilateral meeting betweenVladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani, the priority is cooperation onthe issue ofthe Syrian settlement, taking intoaccount the results that were obtained atthe regular talks inAstana, the analyst said.
