Iraqi Kurdistan referendum to disrupt security: Iran

IRNA Iran sees any independence referendum in Iraq's Kurdistan region as a disrupting for security, a senior Iranian official said on Saturday while voicing Tehran's opposition to the plan.

Answering a question on possible referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan region, the member of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati told reporters that Tehran is 'the strategic ally of Iraq, and will agree to what the legitimate government of the country accepts'.

The independence referendum is approved by Iraqi Kurdistan parliament to be held on September 25 despite harsh oppositions from the federal governement in Baghdad, and warnings from neighboring countries on the repercussions.

Iraq's parliament in a resolution rejected the decision by Kurdish local authorities last week.

Iran is against any step, 'intentional or unintentional', towards independence of a part of Iraq or any other country in the region, Velayati stressed.

Noting that Iraqi government and the majority of its Kurdish people want to have an integrated Iraq and are against the referendum, he added that if the independence-seeking and separatist efforts begin in the region, there would be no end for it.

'No doubt, those who try to colonize and dominate the region, particularly the US and the Zionist regime of Israel, would exploit it to their benefits,' he added.

Pointing to the opposition of the states in the region, the Arab League and Muslim countries to any kind of effort seeking independence or separation in the region, he said that the step 'disrupts the security', and therefore Iran is against it.
