Sputnik News- Permanent Representative of Iraq to the Arab League says that the organization considers the referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan's independence illegal.
The foreign ministers ofthe League ofArab States (Arab League) called the referendum onIraqi Kurdistan's independence fromIraq illegal, adding that it would pose a threat tothe Middle Eastern security, Permanent Representative ofIraq tothe Arab League Habib Sadr said.
Sadr said onWednesday that the Arab League's foreign ministers considered "the referendum illegal and inconsistent withthe Constitution ofIraq."
According tothe official, the foreign ministers urged all the parties concerned topursue a dialogue-oriented approach and address all existing disagreements inaccordance withthe Iraqi Constitution.
"The ministers decided tosupport the territorial integrity ofIraq and assumed that this referendum posed a threat not only tothe unity ofIraq butalso tothe security inthe whole region," Sadr added.
Sadr indicated that other Arab states feared thatthe Iraqi Kurdistan's independence referendummight trigger similar acts outsideIraq and lead tounmanageable processes inthe Middle East.
The Kurds, making upabout 20 percent ofthe Iraqi population, have been seeking self-governance fordecades. In 2005, Iraqs Constitution recognized Kurdistan asan autonomous region run bythe Kurdistan Regional Government.
In June, Masoud Barzani, the president ofIraqi Kurdistan, set September 25 asthe date forthe referendum onthe region's independence fromIraq, prompting criticism fromthe international community.
