Is the US showing support of terrorism?

American Herald Tribune | Kate Harveston: Americans knew that a Donald Trump presidency would bring noticeable change to the nations foreign policy, but what exactly that change would look like was unclear. Appointing men like Rex Tillerson and Steve Bannon to powerful offices was more than enough to spark public speculation about how the new administration would re-cast Americas role in global geopolitics.

Critics of the administration and there are many have cited the close ties to alt-right groups that many Trump cabinet members hold. It would be premature to judge the administration purely on its members pasts, but by openly endorsing a group described by multiple human rights organizations as violent and non-democratic, the US government is playing with fire.

Who Is the MKO?

You may not be familiar with the name MKO. The group first captured the worlds attention during the Iran-Iraq war, and were later involved in atrocities against Iraqi people. The MKO are the Iranian branch of a globally pernicious network, and in the power vacuum left since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, they have positioned themselves to inherit political controlwith the endorsement of western politicians.

USA Aligns Itself with Old Enemies

The annual convention for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a group of political actors who would seek to overthrow the existing regime and empower the MKO, was recently held outside of Paris.

Leadership figures at the conference made numerous mentions of current regimes ailing state. While there were never explicit calls for violence, the probable outcome of eliminating the current administrations limited remaining power would open the door for violence from the MKO and like-minded groups.

Multiple US representatives including Rudi Giuliani and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have openly stated that regime change is needed in Iran. While the public-facing language always makes mention of the need for a peaceful transition of power, documents from as long ago as 2009 make specific mention of Americas interest in using the MKO to perpetrate a proxy war in Iran.

Dissention from Other UN Nations

Its no surprise that Trumps administration has positioned itself as skeptical of NATO and global Unitarian organizations given the ultra-conservative members of Trumps cabinet.

While Trump himself has acted rather moderately in the past, top advisor Steve Bannon served for years as CEO of the super-right publication Breitbart and chief DOT lawyer Steven Bradbury evenacted to allow the use of torture by US agencies during his time as assistant attorney general under George W. Bush.

During this years G20 summit, an annual meeting of world leaders, many journalists noted a distinct change in tone. Specifically, the US behaved as, and was treated as an outsider by world powers including France and Germany. Rather than aligning with other NATO countries, President Trump spent his efforts meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Will the People Stand for This?

The precarious positioning of Trumps administration has had a divisive effect on an American public that was already polarized before the former real-estate mogul came to power. Further complicating the situation is that no one seems quite sure about whether Trump is acting with any purpose, or just making decisions based on gut feeling, a technique hes openly expressed taste for.

Trump must understand that the stakes in global geopolitics are much higher than they are on reality television. Unlike The Apprentice, things have serious long-term consequences in genuine reality.

Wielding the title of leader of the free world after losing the popular vote by 2 million, Trump would do well to check the actions of his warmongering conservative cronies. Countless Americans who believed in the progressive ideals the Obama administration promoted for eight years know howthe world has lost respect for our country. Retribution might not be quick, but it will come one way or another.

Two Roads for the USA

While the idea of Trump admonishing his cabinet to exercise some restraint on foreign policy issues, rather than exacerbating an already fragile global dynamic, is attractive, it may not happen.

Trump has done all in his power to deliver on the campaign promises he made to Christian conservatives, many of whom either dont understand the delicate situation in places like Iran or simplify it in a way that rationalizes violence between innocent peoples that they view as enemies. Men like Tillerson and Bannon capitalize on this when they ask groups like the MKO to perpetrate proxy wars.

So it may be that the USA will be left to pick up the pieces in 2020. Where the administration will have taken foreign policy by then is a scary thing to think about, but in a democratic system the pendulum swings two ways.

The question is, will the progressives who failed to organize well enough to stop Trumps first attempt at power be organized enough to mount a successful counter, or will we allow American to devolve further into becoming the worlds new bad guy?
