US claims about possible chemical attack in Syria to 'hide its own defeat'

Sputnik - Commenting on the recent claims of the White House that the US allegedly "observed potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime" and a subsequent CNN report on the deployment of the US warships targeting Syria's Shayrat airbase, Syrian politician Ammar al-Asad explained to Sputnik the real reason behind the claims.

On Monday, White House spokesperson Sean Spicer claimed that the United States allegedly "observed potential preparations foranother chemical weapons attack bythe Assad regime." And if President Assad went throughwith it, he should expect the US toretaliate.

"If, however, Mr. Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price," Spicer wrote inhis statement.

?Later onWednesday, Defense Secretary James Mattis claimed that "he believes Syria has backed down."

"It appears that they took the warning seriously," Mattis told reporters duringa trip toBrussels fora NATO meeting. "They didn't do it."

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador tothe UN, also told Congress that "Trump's warning stopped the Assad regime."

Also onWednesday, CNN reported that "the US military has ships and aircraft inplace tostrike Syria if ordered todo so byPresident Donald Trump, butso far it does not appear asif the Syrian government has made any further moves towarda chemical weapons attack."

"For now, Syria's Shayrat airbase remains underconstant overhead surveillance bythe US forfurther signs ofwhether a chemical strike may be inthe works," the broadcaster said.

It further reported onthe aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, alongwith two destroyers and two cruisers being deployed inthe eastern Mediterranean Sea forroutine patrol positions.

"The destroyers and cruisers could fire Tomahawk missiles withoutputting pilots inmanned aircraft atrisk. In addition, dozens ofaircraft already inthe Middle East foroperations againstISIS (Daesh) inSyria and Iraq could be used ina potential strike," the broadcaster said.
Commenting onthe abovereports, Syrian MP Ammar al-Asad, deputy head ofthe Foreign Affairs Committee ofthe Syrian parliament, the People's Council, toldSputnik Arabicthat the new wave ofclaims aboutchemical weapons inSyria is needed todistract attention fromthe "landslide victories ofthe Syrian army inthe Syrian Desert onthe border withIraq and its effective cooperation withthe Iraqi People's Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known asthe Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), (Al-Hashd Al-Sha'abi)."

The Syrian MP said that the Syrian and Iraqi forces are currently preparing a joint assault onthe positions ofDaesh militants atDeir ez-Zor city ineastern Syria. While the US, he said, has been supporting the militants and their ground operations sincethe very start oftheir war againstSyria.

Ammar al-Asad recalled that the US has already claimed responsibility onPresident Assad forthe chemical incident inSyria's Khan Sheikhoun inApril. Damascus rejected the accusations and said militants and their allies were responsible.

This week Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed outthat almost three months later, Russia is still trying topush foran OPCW (Organization forthe Prohibition ofthe Chemical Weapons) mission tobe sent toSyria's Khan Sheikhoun.

"Until now the US and its allies have not sent an independent international commission toKhan Sheikhoun forinvestigation ofthe incident. Back inApril, the Syrian government together withRussia suggested sending the commission toSyria's Shayrat airbase, where the aircraft allegedly took offfrom tobomb Khan Sheikhoun, forinvestigation," Ammar al-Asad told Sputnik.
"The US is using all types oflies and falsifications inthe Syrian crisis. At the same time, Israel is advancing inthe south, and Damascus has already made sharp statements toTel Aviv onit. Israel is now escalating the situation inthe Golan Heights and Quneitra Governorate inorder toseize these areas outof the Syrian control," he said.

On Friday, Israel Defense Forces tweeted that the Israeli aviation attacked Syrian troops forthe fourth time ina week, allegedly inresponse toa stray projectile that fell onIsraeli-controlled Golan Heights.
"Sometimes the US and Israel change roles. Tel Aviv is now supporting terrorists inQuneitra Governorate, However they are losing there asthe Syrian army is returning control overstrategic positions inthese regions," Ammar al-Asad said.
The military who are fighting againstSyria need this war. Because they are trading weapons and are bound withthe arms corporations. And the US is acting inthe interests ofIsrael, the Syrian MP concluded.
