Russia registers 8 ceasefire violations in Syria over past 24 hours

MNA Russian Defense Ministry said that commission on the Syrian truce have registered a total of eight violations of the ceasefire regime in Syria over the past 24 hours.


Russian representatives inthe Russian-Turkish commission onthe Syrian truce have registered a total ofeight violations ofthe ceasefire regime inSyria overthe past24 hours, while Turkey informed aboutseven cases, the Russian Defense Ministry said ina daily bulletin Saturday.

"Within last 24 hours, the Russian party ofthe Russia-Turkey Commission onviolations ofthe Joint Agreement has registered 8 cases offiring inthe provinces ofDamascus (6), Latakia (1), and Hama (1). The Turkish party has registered 7 cases ofceasefire violations inthe provinces ofDaraa (2), Homs (2), al-Quneitra (1) and Damascus (2)," the bulletin said.

The number ofsettlements which joined the ceasefire has not been subject tochanges and amounts to1864, while the number ofarmed groups that have joined the cessation ofhostilities has increased byfive to228, according tothe bulletin.

The Syrianwar has been raging forsix years, withgovernment forces fighting againstboth Syrian opposition groups who strive tooverthrow President Bashar Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such asthe ISIL and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, both ofwhich are outlawed inRussia.

Russia and Turkey are the guarantors ofa nationwide Syrian ceasefire regime that came intoforce onDecember 30, 2016 and has been holding upin general, despitecontinued reports ofviolations. The UN Security Council passed a resolution inDecember 2016 supporting the effort.

On May 4, Russia, Turkey and Iran signed the memorandum onestablishment offour safe zones inthe Arab country aspart ofthe Astana talks onSyrian settlement. The four zones span the northwestern Idlib province and parts ofthe neighboring Latakia, Hama and Aleppo, the north ofthe central Homs province, Eastern Ghouta nearDamascus, aswell assouthern Daraa and Quneitra regions. The memorandum came intoforce onMay 6.
