How Iran's influence in Persian Gulf grows amid Saudi rift with Qatar

Sputnik - Tehran seems to be able to get benefits from the Qatar-centered diplomatic row, intelligence firm Soufan Group said.





WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Iran is emerging asa major beneficiary ofa Saudi-led blockade ofQatar, supplying food and other goods tothe small Persian Gulf nation and increasing engagement withKuwait and Oman, Gulf nations that are far less hostile towardTehran, private intelligence firm Soufan Group said ina report onFriday.
"Iran has delivered good exports toQatar tocompensate forQatars reliance onSaudi food supplies that have been cut off," the report stated. "Iran also has redoubled its efforts toengage not only Qatar butalso Kuwait and Oman, inparticular bysending several naval vessels ona port visit toOman afterthe rift erupted."


The report also warned that a prolonged dispute betweenSaudi-led Gulf Cooperation Council nations would interfere withthe seamlessness ofUS operations inthe Gulf, especially a US effort toconstruct a regional ballistic missile defense system toneutralize Irans increasingly sophisticated ballistic missile force.


On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Yemen severed ties withQatar, citing the nations support formilitant Islamist groups such asthe Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and affiliated organizations including Hamas.

The move followed a visit byPresident Donald Trump toSaudi Arabia, inwhich the US president broadly focused onefforts toisolate Iran and counter funding forterrorists inthe Middle East.
