SNSC head: World unsafe due to UN inaction, weakness

MNA Secretary of Irans Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani criticized UN for its weakness and passiveness towards illegal military interventions against other countries which has resulted in ongoing insecurity in the world.

Speaking at the International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues in Russia on Wednesday, Shamkhani said the congregation of National Security high representatives is an opportunity to discuss and exchange views on the most important issues and security threats that the world is facing today.

Undoubtedly, terrorism is still at the forefront of national security threats to the international community, Shamkhani noted, adding, "the most capable terrorist group, ISIL, has inclined over the past two years, losing the control of many regions seized in Iraq, and in the Syria, however, it does not mean that terrorist threats are reducing."

Iran's multi-year experiences in fighting terrorism in Iraq and Syria support the idea that recruitment of terrorists and foreign fighters by ISIL holds a direct relationship with their position in maintaining, advancement or the loss of occupied areas, i.e. when ISIL was able to advance and capture more territory, a flood of new terrorists were to join the group, and in contrast, when the situation was against ISIL, the process of recruitment was reduced or stopped; the experience taught us the mythologizing of the power of ISIL must first be broken, Shamkhani underlined.

He added that reaching a common understanding and correct and comprehensive policy to confront terrorism is important, he said, underlining that the meeting is an opportunity for exchanging experiences and prevention of false and deviated analysis and direction by the sponsors of terrorism.

"Today, the weapons of ISIL and al-Nusra terrorists are more advanced than the ones used in Syria and Iraq;the weapons are donated mainly by certain powers to groups titled as the moderate opposition and then is transferred to other terrorists," Shamkhani noted.

Irans SNSC head Ali Shamkhani arrived in Russia on Tuesday to attend International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues.

The Iranian senior official has held talks with a number of Russian officials on the sidelines of the security summit, aimed at advancing common political, military and security initiatives with present countries in the summit, particularly Irans allies in fighting terrorism.
