MOSCOW (Sputnik) Rouhani was born onNovember 12, 1948 inSorkheh, a city in Iran's northern Semnan Province.
Before entering university, Rouhani took seminary classes inQom Hawza, Iran's largest Islamic seminary school. He then went onto graduate fromthe University ofTehran witha bachelor's degree injudicial law. He continued his studies inGlasgow's Caledonian University inthe United Kingdom, fromwhich he received two degrees: Master ofPhilosophy inlaw and Doctor ofPhilosophy (PhD) inconstitutional law.
Between 1980 and 2000, Rouhani served asa member ofthe Iranian parliament.
During the war betweenIraq and Iran in1980-1988, Rounhani occupied leading positions inthe Iranian Armed Forces command. From 1983 to1988, he was a member ofthe Supreme Defense Council, and between1985 and 1991, served asthe commander ofthe air defense forces. Rouhani held a short tenure asdeputy commander ofIran's Armed Forces in1988-1989.
Since 1989, Rouhani has been working inthe Supreme National Security Council ofIran. He had served asthe ?ouncil's secretary in1989-2005 and asnational security adviser toIran's president in2000-2005. Rouhani represented Iran asa chief negotiator inthe international talks onthe country' nuclear program inbetween 2003 and 2005.
Rouhani has also worked asa member ofIran's Expediency Council since1991, and a member ofthe nation's Assembly ofExperts since1999.
From 1992 to2013, he occupied the position ashead ofthe Center forStrategic Research ofIran.
Rouhani was elected Iran's president onJune 14, 2013, after18 million Iranians voted insupport ofhis candidacy. Two months later, he was officially sworn inas president. His term expires onAugust 3, 2017.
Around 100 books and scientific papers written byRouhani have been published.
Rouhani speaks Arab, English, German, Russian and French.
