Solving Korean nuclear problem by analogy with Iran impossible - Moscow

Sputnik - An official from the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it is impossible to resolve the issue of the North Korean nuclear program in the same way the Iranian nuclear problem was settled.

VIENNA (Sputnik) It is possible todenuclearize the Korean Peninsula using political and diplomatic means, butnot byan analogy withthe solution ofthe Iranian nuclear problem, the director ofthe Russian Foreign Ministry's department forarms control, Mikhail Ulyanov, told Sputnik onFriday.
"The Iranian example showed that there is a real possibility toresolve even the most difficult issues throughpolitical and diplomatic means, if there is, firstly, a political will, and secondly, enough creativity forthat," Ulyanov said.

Ulyanov noted that the situation onthe Korean Peninsula was significantly different fromthe one aroundIran's nuclear program, so it is impossible tofully copy the resolution process.

"But I'm talking aboutfundamental approaches that should be centered aroundpolitical and diplomatic efforts and not aroundbellicose rhetoric and large-scale military maneuvers, and not only aroundsanctions," Ulyanov added.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) was signed byIran and the P5+1 countries China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States plus Germany inJuly 2015, ensuring the peaceful nature ofthe Iranian nuclear program inreturn forthe gradual lifting ofsanctions againstTehran. The deal came intoforce onJanuary 16, 2016, afterthe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran was ready toimplement the program toreduce its nuclear potential.

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in2005. The United States, Japan and South Korea, aswell asRussia and China, took part intalks withNorth Korea onthe denuclearization ofthe Korean peninsula between2003 and 2009, when Pyongyang withdrew fromthe talks.

Tensions aroundNorth Korea's activities withboth nuclear and non-nuclear weapons have drastically escalated inrecent months, afterPyongyang conducted a number ofnuclear tests and ballistic missile launches inviolation ofthe UN Security Council's resolutions.
