EU, Russia have similar views on Syria humanitarian situation

MNA According to the EU foreign policy chief, the bloc and Russia share views on the need to improve humanitarian access to Syria.


The European Union and Russia share views onthe need toimprove humanitarian access toSyria, and Brussels counts onRussian support inthis regard, including throughthe Astana process, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini told reporters Monday.

"We share the same approach that access tohumanitarian aid inSyria has tobe improved. We count onRussian work, including throughAstana process. We share an interest ofputting end tothis war," Mogherini said aftermeeting withRussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Syria has been mired in war since2011, withgovernment forces loyal toPresident Bashar Assad fighting a number ofopposition factions and extremist groups, such asISIL and Jabhat Fatah al Sham.

According toUN Special Envoy forSyria Staffan de Mistura, unofficial estimates show that atleast 400,000 people have been killed inthe pastfive years ofwar inSyria.
