Sputnik- The Syrian army lost contact with a jet performing a reconnaissance mission near the Turkish border, local media said Saturday.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) Earlier inthe day, fighters fromSyria's Ahrar al Sham Islamist extremist group claimed tohave shot downa Syrian government MiG-21 fighter jet overthe Syrian province ofIdlib. Syrian government sources later reportedly confirmed that contact had been lost witha low-flying plane overIdlib, butsaid this was due totechnical difficulties.


Contact withthe jet was lost and the military is now searching forthe pilot, who had ejected, the SANA news agency reported, citing a military source.


Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has confirmed that a Syrian military plane had crashed insouth Turkey's Hatay province.

Media reports said, citing Turkish sources, that the jet was a MiG-23 fighter rather thana MiG-21.

Debris ofa crashed Syrian fighter jet were found nearthe Turkish border withSyria, according tothe Hatay province governor.

The pilot apparently had ejected, the governor added.

The news comes amidthe nationwide ceasefire inSyria betweenDamascus and Syrian rebels that came intoforce onDecember 30, and has been holding upin general, despitecontinued reports ofviolations. The UN Security Council passed a resolution inDecember supporting the effort.
