Heavy flood uncovers medieval cemetery in Iran
Sputnik- In southern Iran, tablets and tombstones from the 13th-14th centuries were unearthed due to severe flooding that hit several Iranian provinces in mid-February.

Seasonal flooding and the erosion ofthe riverbed ofa local river, caused byrecent heavy rains, revealed an old cemetery inthe vicinity ofa holy shrine inJouyom, a town inLarestan County inFars Province, Iranian Students News Agency reported. The information was confirmed byKhoshayar Shibani, the head ofthe local office ofIran's Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism ata press conference.

?"Apparently, the graveyard dates back tothe 7th century ofthe lunar calendar (13th 14th century AD)," Shibani told reporters. He also added that local inhabitants had only accepted Islam inthe 9th century AD, so most ofthe historical monuments found nearJouyom reflect the cultural heritage ofIslam.

The cultural heritage official denied rumors aboutthe discovery ofan ancient city. "Larestan's Office ofCultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization has been informed only aboutthe discovery ofthe cemetery," he continued.

?According toShibani, all artifacts were promptly collected bylocal authorities and transferred toa special repository. The area where the tablets were found is cordoned offand guarded bythe police. Immediately afterthe water level descends, archaeologists will begin studies and excavations inthe area.
