Israeli jet strikes Syrian army in West Damascus

Sputnik- An Israeli military plane carried out an airstrike on the Syrian government forces stationed in the western countryside of Damascus near the Lebanese border.





According toa Syrian Army source, the attack targeted the Jard Nalhleh area ofthe Qalamoun Mountains. Information aboutcasualties is being verified.

A month ago, Israel bombed a military airport nearDamacus. A Syrian official told Sputnik that it was done "to encourage and support terrorists". Damascus vowed repercussions.

In early February, an Israeli helicopter reportedly fired atSyrian government forces' positions inthe province ofQuneitra insouthern Syria, aftera shell landed inthe Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights, internationally recognized asSyrian territory, was seized byIsrael duringthe Six-Day War in1967. In 1981, the Israeli parliament voted toannex two-thirds ofthe region. The United Nations has repeatedly stated that Israel's occupation ofthe Golan Heights is illegal, calling forit tobe returned toSyria.

Since 2011, Syria has been engulfed ina civil war, withgovernment forces fighting againstnumerous opposition and terrorist groups, including al-Nusra Front and Daesh, banned ina range ofcountries, including Russia.
