Tehran slams Saudi Arabia's attacks on Yemeni civilians during 'Fruitless War'

Sputnik News- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi criticized on Wednesday Riyadh's airstrikes carried out against civilians in Yemen, attributing them to Saudi Arabia's frustration with the "fruitless war."

Qassemi added that Tehran regards Saudi Arabia asthe "cause ofbloody crimes againstArab nations ofSyria, Iraq and Yemen" and stressed that Riyadh betrayed Muslim people bysiding withTel Aviv inthe issue ofIsraeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir's justification ofbrutal attacks againstYemeni civilians, women and children is a sign ofhis country's frustration and heavy defeat bystrong commitment ofYemen's tireless people," Qassemi said asquoted byFARS News.

Since 2014, Yemen has been engulfed ina military conflict betweenthe legitimate government ofHadi and Iran-allied Houthi rebels, supported byforces loyal toformer President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition ofArab states started a military campaign todefeat the rebels and restore the legitimate government.

The civilian death toll inthe Yemeni conflict has surpassed 11,000 asof October 2016, according toUN report, citing human rights monitors.
