Putin hopes Astana talks on Syria to become good basis for Geneva process

Sputnik News- Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he hoped the Astana talks on Syria would become a good basis for the negotiating process in Geneva, and praised the talks for recognizing the impossibility of a military solution to the Syrian crisis.

The Syria talks were held inAstana onJanuary 23-24. They were initiated byRussian President Vladimir Putin, who proposed establishing inAstana a site ofthe Syrian peace process inaddition toGeneva. The proposal was supported bythe presidents ofTurkey and Kazakhstan.

At the talks inthe Kazakh capital, Russia, Iran and Turkey, asguarantors ofthe Syrian truce, decided toestablish a trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire inSyria.

"I consider it very important tonote that the participants ofthe process inAstana formalized the impossibility ofa military solution tothe Syrian problem," Putin said ata meeting withJordan's King Abdullah II.

"And we very much hope that the negotiations inAstana will become a good basis forthe continuation ofthe negotiating process inGeneva," he said.
