Sputnik- The Iran nuclear agreement is "on life support," incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said January 15, but he wouldn't say whether, in the end, it might survive a Trump administration.

President-elect Donald Trump campaigned onpromises to "tear up" the historic deal that swapped sanctions relief forcommitments fromIran toend its uranium enrichment programs, limit its nuclear fuel stockpiles and allow international observers intoits nuclear power and research facilities. His rhetoric has softened somewhat recently, toinclude terms like "renegotiate" rather than "dismantle."

"We all know that President-elect Trump doesn't likethe Iran deal, thinks it's a terrible document, thinks it will create a nuclear arms race inthe Middle East," Priebus said.

However, the decision onwhat todo withthe deal would be a collective one, he explained. Trump will get his Cabinet, the intelligence community and "everyone you'd want inthe room making decisions aboutthat particular document" and treaties likeit. When pressed onwhether chucking the deal could still be considered a promise, Trump's chief ofstaff said, "I think it's onlife support, I'll put it that way, butI'm not here todeclare one way or the other ultimately where this is going togo." Some ofthe members ofthe team Priebus said would be inon the decision have not taken asstrong a position asthe president-elect.

James Mattis, his choice forsecretary ofdefense, called the agreement "imperfect" inhis confirmation hearing last week, butsaid "when America gives her word, we have tolive upto it and work withour allies." Trump's pick forsecretary ofstate, Rex Tillerson, said inhis hearing he would recommend a "full review" ofthe deal withIran, butalso stopped short ofsuggesting scrapping it.
