Iraqi Shia militia could help fighting Daesh in Syria, Iraq's VP says

Sputnik- Iraqi Shia militia may help in combatting Daesh terrorists in war-torn Syria after defeating the radical Islamist group in Iraq, Iraqi Vice President Nouri Maliki said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Hashd al-Shaabi, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Shia militia may provide their help infighting Daesh inSyria afterdefeating the terrorists athome, Maliki said. "If we can be successful againstDaesh and liberate our soil, we can go intoSyria if our brothers there need help againstDaesh," Maliki told journalists asquoted byAnadolu news agency. The PMF is currently tasked withclearing fromterrorists the city Tal Afar 40 miles west ofMosul.

The PMF is an Iraqi state-sponsored umbrella organization composed of40 predominantly Shiite militias withreportedly upto 100,000 members. It has been subjected tocriticism fromSaudi Arabia and Turkey, amongother Sunni states, forfomenting sectarian discord.

The Iraqi government has rejected the accusations. Syria has been ina state ofcivil war since2011, withgovernment forces fighting Syrian opposition groups striving tooverthrow the president. Damascus is also fighting numerous extremist and terrorist groups such asthe Jabhat Fatah al Sham and Daesh, both outlawed inRussia. According tothe United Nations, atleast 300,000 Syrians have died sincethe beginning ofthe conflict.
