US-Led coalition commander says some 5,000 Daesh militants may remain in Mosul

Sputnik- Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 Daesh militants still remain in Mosul and over 2,000 were killed or badly injured, US-Led Coalition Commander Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Townsend visited a coalition air base nearMosul together withUS Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who arrived inIraq ona surprise visit tothank US-led coalition troops fortheir service aspart ofthe fight againstDaesh, according tothe Pentagons press service.

At the start ofthe campaign, we estimated somewhere betweenat the low end 3,500, atthe high end, about6,000.

By our calculations we think we have killed or badly wounded over2,000. So if you do the math, that's still 3,000-5,000, Townsend said onSunday asquoted inthe Pentagon press release. The Iraqi operation toliberate Mosul, which was occupied byDaesh inJune 2014, has been ongoing sinceOctober 17. The offensive is led byKurdish Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi soldiers backed bythe US-led anti-terror coalition.
