Choice of Tillerson as state secretary to reset US-Russia relations

Sputnik- A former adviser to Trump said that the possible appointment of Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as the next US state secretary under the incoming US President-elect Donald Trump's administration is likely to put an end to US-Russia tensions and open a new era in relations between the two countries.

Trump is currently forming his administration inpreparation forhis inauguration onJanuary 20. On Saturday, reports emerged that Trump decided toappoint Tillerson asthe new US secretary ofstate tosucceed John Kerry underthe incoming administration. The official announcement is expected totake place next week, according tothe reports.

"The selection ofRex Tillerson asthe next US Secretary ofState will represent a dramatic improvement inAmericas approach tothe world. The US and Russia still have 99 problems toaddress athome and aroundthe world. But this marks the start ofa new era where they can now work onthem together, instead ofremaining consistently obstructed bya long history oftoxic personal relationships," Page, an oil industry consultant who served asa foreign policy adviser toTrump duringthe presidential campaign, said.

Tillerson, who is now 64, has been the Exxon Mobil CEO since2004. In the 1990s, Tillerson worked forExxonMobil inRussia. The CEO has met withRussian President Vladimir Putin a number oftimes while heading the company. US-Russian relations deteriorated underSecretary ofState John Kerry. In 2014, the United States introduced a number ofeconomic and individual sanctions againstRussia overits alleged meddling inthe Ukrainian conflict. The spat grew further in2016 when the two countries failed tosecure a lasting ceasefire inwar-torn Syria overdifferences inapproaches onhow toachieve a settlement.
