New visa rules, competitive prices attract millions of new tourists to Russia

Foreign tourism continues to thrive in Russia, with Moscow and St. Petersburg remaining the destinations of choice for most foreign travelers, according to RIA Novosti.

The past nine months have seen an ever-increasing number of foreign tourists visiting Russia, with many of them preferring to travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Leonid Marmer, head of the leading tour operator Intourist Thomas Cook, was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying that inbound tourism in Russia increased by 13 percent in 2015 as compared with the previous year, and that the industry has continued to grow over the last nine months.

"After the removal ofvisa restrictions, the tourist flow fromChina, South Korea, Israel and Latin America shows no sign ofabating inRussia," he said.

Marmer was echoed byVadim Kiryukhin ofthe tour operator Svoy TS, who cited a growing number oftourists fromIran, France, Belgium and Spain. According toIran's Tasnim News Agency, the head ofRussias Federal Tourism Agency, Oleg Safonov, said the agency has proposed mutual visa-free group tourist exchanges withIndia, Vietnam and Iran.

He also cited security reasons when speaking offoreign tourists' drive totravel toRussia, and noted that the cost oftourism services plummeted afterthe sharp depreciation ofthe ruble in2014.

Apart fromMoscow and St. Petersburg, foreign tourists also travel toKazan, the capital and largest city ofthe Russian Republic ofTatarstan.

"Kazan, infact, has become the third tourist capital ofRussia. And only the lack offoreign air carriers' direct flights toKazan slightly restricts the rapid growth ofthis trend," Leonid Marmer said.

Other destinations include the Golden Ring, a group ofhistoric cities located northeast ofMoscow, aswell asthe Silver Ring, a number ofcities outsideSt. Petersburg which feature historical and cultural sights.

Additionally, more foreign tourists are arriving inCrimea which is visited, amongothers, bytourists fromThailand and Iran, according toVladimir Kiryukhin.

Andrey Nazarov, chairman ofthe board ofthe Yalta Economic Forum, said forhis part that "owners ofmajor Italian companies asked us toorganize a vacation inCrimea next year forthem and their loved ones."

Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the number oftourists coming tothe Russian capital in2016 will increase by2.5 percent to17.5 million people, according tothe Russian newspaper Kommersant.

The newspaper also quoted Marina Levchenko, head ofthe tour operator Tari Tour, assaying that the average cost oftravel toRussia currently stands atabout 1,000 euros.

All inall, 12 million foreign tourists visited Russia last year, according todata fromthe Russian border control service. The most interest inRussia was shown bytourists fromChina (the number oftourists toRussia increased by34%), South Korea (by 30%), France (by 20%), Italy (by 16%) and the United States (by 15%). Israel, Finland and the United Kingdom are also amongthe leaders.
