Iran launches ambitious 'national internet' to protect country from cyberattacks

Iran is launching the "National Internet" project, an alternative form of censorship in cyberspace. The project is tasked with controlling the spread of "viral and immoral information from the West" as well as preventing any kind of cyberattacks on strategically important objects in the country.

In an interview withSputnik, editor-in-chief ofthe Iranian newspaper Iran Press Emad Abshenass explained the relevance ofthe new project. "Today practically all Iranian services related tobank operations and the work ofthe country's administrative offices are carried outvia Internet, even the process ofregistration and application tothe university. So if, forsome reason, Iran loses its Internet connection, the work ofall these bodies and agencies will simply go down,'" the expert said.

Abshenass also explained that currently Iran is connected tothe Internet viatwo cables: one goes throughDubai, and the other throughTurkey. Iranian telecommunication satellite systems are also connected toa global "web," butdo not cover a large amount ofonline data, he said.

The inconvenient thing is that the signal passes throughseveral barrier filters untilit eventually reaches the Iranian user. Thanks tothe national cyber network, users who want totransfer data toeach other insidethe country will no longer need tohave the information processed outsideIran, the expert stated.

At the same time, internet data will be subject tostronger censorship thanbefore. The project is designed tofilter information and block data considered immoral and inappropriate forIranian youth.

Nevertheless, Abshenass is confident that the new project will have a lot ofpositive effects fornational security. According tohim, it will help toenhance the country's cybersecurity, ensure uninterrupted work ofmajor state institutions and prevent possible attacks onthe country's vital infrastructure. The expert claimed that the Internet system which Iran has used previously is "under control ofIran's enemies, such asthe United States." "If the US and its allies impose sanctions onthe use ofthe Internet againstIran, the vital activities ofthe country's infrastructure will be cut off. Even the internal network data exchange betweendomestic banks will be impossible forthe citizens ofthe country, not tomention the cyber security ofstrategic nuclear facilities," Abshenass stated. According toofficial data, the project cost the country 6.3 million dollars overthe last three years. Iran is currently launching the first stage ofthe project, which already guarantees the country their desired security.

"Even if today communication withthe outsideworld will be cut offdue tothe sanctions, the operation ofthe Iranian internal systems won't stop," Abshenass concluded.
