Reports on Iran's 'renewed attempts' to build nuclear weapons are 'absurd'

German newspaper Tagesspiegel has recently accused Iran of attempting to built a nuclear bomb, referring to the Federal Office for the Protection of the German Constitution that allegedly has "incontrovertible evidence that Iran is trying by all means to get the materials needed to build nuclear warheads and launchers."

In an interview withSputnik, Hassan Beheshtipour, expert inthe field ofnuclear energy and Press TV's political observer, commented onthe issue, saying that the statements made bythe newspaper have nothing todo withreality.
"First I want todraw the attention ofthe listeners tothe fact that such false statements have been made bya German media source not forthe first time. The explanation is simple. Such publications comply withthe spirit ofthe information policy ofthe German press, which is pro-Israel. These groundless and false statements are based onsome indirect prepositions, butnot the facts," the expert said.

The newspaper referred tothe data ofthe German Ministry ofInterior, according towhich Iran has been conducting illegal searches fortechnology tocreate weapons ofmass destruction. Moreover, the newspaper claims that Iran's moves inthis direction have become more intensive inrecent years.

"There were about90 illegal attempts togain access toequipment that would be used fornuclear weapons and launchers," the newspaper wrote.

According toBeheshtipour, such statements that Iran is allegedly secretly trying toget the materials needed tobuild nuclear warheads sound "absurd".

The expert stated that Iran is acting inaccordance withthe principle oftransparency, which is strictly controlled bythe IAEA. Moreover, the country voluntarily signed the Additional Protocol tothe safeguards agreement withthe IAEA and continues tocomply withall the conditions withregard tothe peaceful use ofnuclear energy.
"The publication ofsuch articles primarily targets an unprepared audience that is not fully aware aboutall the details ofthe documents signed onthe Iranian nuclear program, inparticular JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction]. Do all readers know that this important document has a section which describes the tiniest details ofa monitoring mechanism onIran's purchases ofmaterials, substances, equipment and technology, even dual-use items, inthe framework ofthe Iranian nuclear program?," Beheshtipour asked.

"Therefore, I think that behindall these false publications are pro-Israel forces, whose policy is based onIranophobia and aimed atdiscrediting Iran's image inthe eyes ofthe international community, and asa fact, disrupting JCPOA," the expert concluded.

In July 2015, Iran and six world powers, including the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, signed the nuclear agreement toensure the peaceful nature ofTehran's nuclear program inexchange forsanctions relief. As a result ofthe deal, Iran has cut its enrichment-related activities and stopped its work onheavy water-related projects.
