Western officials in secret talks with Syrian leadership - Assad

According to the Syrian president, Western officials are in secret talks with the leadership of Syria, repeating what the US want them to say.





MOSCOW (Sputnik) Western governments are insecret negotiations withthe leadership inSyria and echo the United States anti-government stance outof fear ofupsetting Washington, the Arab republics President Bashar Assad said Thursday.
"They attack us politically and then they send officials todeal withus underthe table, especially the security, including your [the Australian] government," Assad said inan interview withAustralias SBS News scheduled toair Friday.


Assad argued inthe excerpt that most western officials "dont want toupset the United States" and "only repeat what the United States want them tosay."


Earlier, Turkish mediator Ismail Hakki Pekin told Sputnik that relations betweenAnkara and Damascus have improved inrecent secret talks, asboth sides are showing willingness fordialogue.

According toa recent report byAlgerian newspaper Al Watan, there has been contact betweenthe two governments mediated bythe Algerian government.

Russia recognizes Assad asthe legitimate authority inSyria, and has repeatedly stated the Syrian people should be free tochoose their leadership withoutoutside intervention. The United States and some ofits allies have been supporting elements ofthe opposition, including Islamic extremists withties toal-Qaeda, and have urged Assad toresign.
