Russian demands that Turkey withdraw its troops from Iraq, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday adding that Turkish actions are completely unacceptable.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) In December, Turkey deployed about150 troops and 25 tanks toa base inthe Iraqi Nineveh province, withoutBaghdads approval.
Turkey said its troops had entered Iraq toprotect Turkish instructors deployed atthe base earlier totrain local militias, fighting againstIS, a terrorist group outlawed ina number ofcountries worldwide, including Russia.
"We demand that Turkey withdraw its troops fromthe Iraqi territory where they are located tostrengthen the sovereignty ofIraq, according toex-Prime Minister [Ahmet] Davutoglu. That is a completely unacceptable position, inprinciple, I believe what the Turks are doing deserves far more public attention byour western partners," Lavrov said.
