Moscow, Tehran preparing deal to reprofile Irans Fordow nuclear facility

Moscow and Tehran are trying to convert Irans Fordow former uranium enrichment plant into a production facility for heavy isotopes, Russias Rosatom nuclear energy corporation said in a statement on Friday.

On May 25-26, Rosatom Deputy Director General Nikolai Spasskiy held consultations withIranian Ambassador toRussia Mehdi Sanaei and Behrouz Kamalvandi, the deputy head ofthe Atomic Energy Organization ofIran (AEOI).

During these talks, "satisfaction was expressed withregard tothe progress inagreeing a contract onpreliminary research forthe reprofiling ofthe Iranian Fordow facility toproduce heavy isotopes," the statement reads.

The reprofiling ofthe Fordow facility was stipulated inthe Joint Plan ofComprehensive Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal reached betweenIran and six world powers, including Russia and the United States, inJuly 2015.

In April, Russias permanent envoy tothe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international organizations inVienna, Vladimir Voronkov, said that the type oftable isotopes tobe produced atFordow had been determined. According toVoronkov, production atthe reorganized facility could start in2018.
