Indian warships berth in southern Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- A detachment of India's fleet of warships docked in Iran's territorial waters in the Southern port of Bandar Abbas on Tuesday.

"Two frigate-type Ganga F22 and Trikand F51 warships of the Indian Navy berthed in Bandar Abbas port and they will stay here there for four days," Rear Admiral Hossein Azad said on Tuesday.

The Iranian Naval officials in a ceremony welcomed the Indian warships' commanders.

Rear Admiral Azad said that this is the second time that the Indian warships berth in Southern Iran in less than a year.

Ganga (F22) is a Godavari-class guided-missile frigate of the Indian Navy. Trikand (F51) is a Talwar-class frigate of the Indian Navy.

In August 2015, two F39-type frigate warships of the Indian Navy berthed in Bandar Abbas port and stayed there for several days.

In March 2015, Iran's 33rd fleet of warships berthed in Cochin Port of India.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of Somali sea pirates.

The Gulf of Aden - which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea - is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West via the Suez Canal.
