US operations in and near the Strait of Hormuz will continue despite Irans recent threat to close the strategic strait in response to US-led maritime drills in the region, Department of Defense spokesperson Peter Cook said during a press briefing on Thursday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) On Wednesday, deputy commander ofIrans Islamic Revolution Guards Corps warned that Tehran may close the Strait ofHormuz if the United States continues "threatening" passages throughthe strategic waterway.

"We will continue tofly, sail and operate wherever international law allows, and any effort tocut down, tosomehow shut downa waterway ofcritical importance tothe global economy is something that we would treat witha great degree ofconcern," Cook stated.

The spokesperson noted that the United States has its forces present there toensure "the free flow ofcommerce" aswell asthat "American interests are maintained."

On April 4-26, the largest maritime drills led bythe US Naval Forces Central Command the International Mine Countermeasures Exercise took place atthe worlds major maritime choke points, including the Suez Canal, the Strait ofBab Al-Mandeb and the Strait ofHormuz. More than30 nations fromsix continents have been involved inthe drills.

The Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the exercise onMonday, demanding an explanation fromthe United States asto its decision tochoose the region forthe drills.

The Strait ofHormuz accounts foralmost one-third ofthe world's oil trade sea passages.
