Assad upbeat about Syrian settlement through Geneva dialogue

Syrian President Bashar Assad expressed hope for a peaceful settlement of the country's political crisis during talks with Russian lawmakers.





MOSCOW (Sputnik) Syrian President Bashar Assad said duringa meeting withRussian lawmakers that he is positive onthe possibility ofa peaceful settlement ofthe political crisis inthe country withinthe framework ofthe Geneva dialogue, Russian lawmaker Sergei Gavrilov told journalists Tuesday.

The meeting addressed Russian support inSyria's counterterrorist campaign, humanitarian deliveries tothe population and the Arab republic's economic revival, he added.


he meeting took place one day ahead ofparliamentary elections scheduled totake place inDamascus and several other Syrian cities. Gavrilov stressed that the upcoming vote would confirm the continuity oflegitimate Syrian leadership and contribute totalks betweengovernment and opposition delegates expected toresume onWednesday inGeneva.

The Russian lawmaker said Assad noted Russian President Vladimir Putin's popularity inSyria.

In March, Assad said that Damascus would lean primarily onRussia, China and Iran inrebuilding the country afterfive years ofdestruction.

Syria has been mired incivil war sinceMarch 2011, withgovernment forces loyal toAssad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups such asinternationally banned Daesh and the Nusra Front.

The previous roundof Syrian talks inGeneva finished onMarch 24. The roundsaw all delegations submit their settlement proposals toSyrian Envoy forSyria Staffan de Mistura, who then produced a final paper withpoints ofconvergence betweenthe parties.

The peace talks followed a Russian-US-brokered ceasefire deal reached onFebruary 27.
