Iran needs nine atomic power plants in next decade

Tehran, March 9, IRNA Spokesman of Iran Atomic Energy Organization Behrouz Kamalvandi said the country is in need of nine atomic power plants in the next 10 years given that in 2025 it should generate at least 100 thousand megawatt electricity.


Stressing that about 8 to 12 percent of the countrys electricity should be generated through atomic power plants, he said there is a great possibility for the construction of two new power plants on the basis of three international models.

As for the construction of new power plants, Kamalvandi said investment of domestic private sector or foreign investment should be used in this regard, adding that in the post-sanction era the issue has been warmly received.

He further remarked that in the post-sanction era a number of foreign meetings have been held and highly satisfactorily proposals have been received with regard to the construction of power plants in accordance with BOO, BOT, IPP and EPCF models which are highly beneficial for the country.

Kamalvandi noted that there is a competition among a number of countries for the construction of new atomic power plants in Iran and this prepare the ground for Iran to select the best options.

Referring to the misinterpretation of some media on the establishment of IAEA office in Iran, he said such an office will not be opened in Iran rather an Iran office will be opened in the Agency itself.
