Deputy FM: Iran supports national dialog in Yemen

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Tehran supports dialog among all political groups in Yemen.

"It is paramount to stop the conflict and send humanitarian aid to the war-torn country. Iran supports the idea of comprehensive talks among all parties involved in the conflict," Amir Abdollahian said Tuesday in a meeting with Director-General of the Swiss Foreign Ministry for the Middle East Affairs Wolfgang Brulhart in Tehran.

He stressed the need to continue cooperation with Switzerland in the push for resolving regional and humanitarian issues.

"Countries should assist in the war on terror and establishment of ceasefire. This way we can say with confidence that the developments in Syria are on the right path too. We can also say after the ceasefire there are better prospects for talks to resolve that conflict."

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for more than 11 months now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 8,600 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Hadi stepped down in January 2015 and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.

Despite Riyadhs claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

Over 3,750 schools have been closed and at least 1.2 million Yemeni people have been displaced so far.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the recent airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a that killed 32 and injured 41 civilians.

"The Secretary-General is concerned about the continuing intense airstrikes and ground fighting in Yemen despite his repeated calls for a cessation of hostilities. In this regard, he strongly condemns the apparent airstrike on 27 February 2016 that hit Khaleq market, in Nahem District in Sanaa, killing at least 32 civilians and injuring at least 41 civilians," the United Nations said in a statement.

The statement added that the death toll was among the highest from a single bombing since September 2015.
