IRGC commander: World powers' attempts to overthrow Assad blocked by Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Hossein Salami underlined Iran's influential role in the region, and said the country stopped foreign powers from overthrowing the government in Damascus.

"All big powers were there in Syria. Iran was there too, determined to keep Bashar Assad in power. In the end, they failed to affect regime change," Salami said, addressing a large gathering of Basij Volunteer Force officials in Tehran on Wednesday.

He noted that Tehran will continue to play a key role in the ongoing war on foreign-backed terrorsit groups in Syria as well as the political process.

Elsewhere, Salami said the Palestinian, Lebanese, Iraqi, Syrian and Yemeni resistance forces are Iran's strategic depths and allies, fighting on different fronts against enemies.

In relevant remarks in December, Iranian Supreme Leader's Top Adviser for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati had said no foreign state is entitled to decide for Syrias fate, arguing that President Assad is Tehrans redline.

Bashar Assad is the Islamic Republic of Irans redline since he has been elected by the Syrian people, and the Syrian people should finally decide about their countrys fate, Velayati said in an interview with the state TV.

He underscored that Iran will not leave Assad alone either in the battle ground or in politics.

Velayati, meantime, stressed that no foreign country can decide about Syrias future.

Also, in November, Velayati underlined that Tehran would continue support for the Syrian and Iraqi governments as well as the resistance fronts in Lebanon and Palestine.

Iran has succeeded in aborting the US plots in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq by increasing necessary support for the government of President Bashar al-Assad with the help of the Hezbollah of Lebanon and the Iraqi forces, he said in an interview with the Lebanese daily Al-Safir.

Velayati stressed that Tehran would never give up support for President Assad, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine.
