'NATO pretends to fight terrorism in Syria'

MOSCOW, Feb. 08 (MNA) Thanks to Russia's anti-terrorist support, the Syrians in a few months verified that it is possible to beat that scourge, and now they think about their country's future, said a Russian military source.

Responding to criticism made by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against Russia's air support to Damascus in the fight against the ISIL and other terrorist groups, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry, said that the irrational actions of NATO encourage the escalation of the conflict in the Arab nation.

The NATO forces pretended for three years to be fighting terrorism before start of the Russian operation in Syria, said Konashenkov regarding the air and naval support of the Aerospace Forces of Kremlin to the Army loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad, started on September 30, 2015.

Nobody in the West or in Brussels thought about the negotiations about Syria. They only established the deadlines to make the country collapse, repeating the plan of Libya, deplored Konashenkov, noting that the NATO countries were precisely those who established there "a Western-style democracy".

On Friday, Feb.5, NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, accused Russia of hindering the normalization of the situation in Syria with its operation and undermining the efforts to find a political solution to the conflict (which was encouraged since 2011 by the United States and its allies in the West and in the region)

The NATO chief also said that the presence of Russian troops in Syria leads to increase tensions, mainly with Turkey.
