Iran, UN envoy discuss crisis in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in a phone conversation on Sunday discussed the Syrian crisis and ways to resolve it.

Amir Abdollahian reassured de Mistura that Tehran will continue its support for the world body's efforts to hold Syrian-Syrian talks.

"It is the Syrian people who will make the final decision about the future of their country," he added.

He warned against the presence of terrorists in Geneva in a bid to use the meeting for political recognition, noting that terrorists will not have a place in Syria's future.

De Mistura, for his part, said the ongoing Geneva talks focuses on dialog, ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and fighting terrorism."

Iran has supported the Syrian people and government since the very first day that the Muslim nation came under terrorist attacks.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in a meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader's top Adviser for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati in last November appreciated Tehran for its efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

During the meeting in Damascus, Muallem also lauded Iran for helping his country in its ongoing fight against terrorism.

"The effective campaign of the Syrian Army, the Russian Air Force, and the other true regional allies of the Syrian nation also made clear to everyone which party is truly fighting against the terrorists in Syria," the Syrian foreign minister said.
