IRGC commander: Al-Saud playing as "Defense Shield" for Israel

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari expressed deep regret that the Saudi officials have turned into Israel's regime against the Islamic Revolution.

"Today, the enemies have resorted to proxy wars and using other Muslim world capacities, instead of direct confrontation, against the Islamic Revolution and its example can be seen in what Saudi Arabia is doing," Jafari said, addressing a ceremony in Tehran on Tuesday.

"Today, the al-Saud has turned into a defense shield for the Zionists," he added.

Jafari, meantime, underlined that the enemies' plots are being foiled one after another by the vigilant Iranian and regional nations.

In relevant remarks on Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on Saudi Arabia to abandon its hostile policies against the regional states, including Iran, warning that escalation of the crisis by Riyadh might meet Iran's crushing response.

"Saudi Arabia doesnt have a good behavior towards the regional states," Rouhani said, addressing a press conference in Tehran.

He referred to Riyadh's war against Yemen and its mismanagement of the Hajj ceremony, and said, "Saudi Arabia has chosen a wrong path for itself and we hope that it will not continue this path and return to a path beneficial to the (Muslim) community."

"What we want is settlement of the regional issues based on logic but meantime our nation and government doesnt accept undiplomatic and incorrect behaviors and will give a firm response to certain behaviors, if necessary," Rouhani warned.

Also, on Friday, Iranian Supreme Leader's top adviser for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati blamed Saudi Arabia's unacceptable policies throughout the past years for the current standoff between Tehran and Riyadh.

"I believe the recent tension started because of the wrong policies of the Saudis who tried to isolated Iran on the international scene," Velayati told reporters.

Velayati underlined that Iran pays heed to interaction with its neighboring states, and said, It is impossible in the arena of foreign policy to make a decision without taking the opposite sides demands into consideration."

He reminded Riyadh that even the powerful countries are currently seeking to interact with Iran based on mutual respect due to the Islamic Republics regional and international status.

Saudi Arabia has been pursuing a crisis-escalation policy against Iran during this month.

The country cut relations with Iran after protestors angry at prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr' execution stormed the country's embassy in Tehran on January 2 despite the Iranian officials' detention of 40 people in relations with embassy attack and their promise to pursue the issue.

Also, the Saudi warplanes launched airstrikes on Iran's embassy in the Yemeni capital earlier this month which injured the mission's guards.

The Saudi media outlets also said that the country plans to try four Iranians on espionage and terrorism charges, a move that is widely seen as yet another part of the crisis-escalation policy pursued by Riyadh against Tehran.
