Saudi foreign ministry informs UNSC of embassy attacks in Iran

Saudi Arabia has briefed the UN Security Council and a range of regional organizations of overnight attacks on its diplomatic missions by protesters in two of Irans biggest cities, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said early Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) A group ofprotesters stormed the Saudi embassy building inTehran, setting it onfire beforelaw enforcement arrested several ofthe demonstrators. Crowds inthe second most populous city ofMashhad scaled the Saudi consulate fence and seized a Saudi flag late Saturday.
"The Kingdom has briefed the Security Council ofthe attacks, aswell asthe Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League and the Organization ofIslamic Cooperation," the ministry tweeted followingForeign Minister Adel al-Jubeirs press conference.


Al-Jubeir announced that Saudi Arabia had cut offdiplomatic ties withIran followingthe attacks byIranian demonstrators protesting the execution ofa prominent Shia cleric announced onSaturday.
Iranian diplomats were ordered toleave the country within48 hours, while 47 ofSaudi diplomatic mission staff have safely returned totheir homeland withthe help ofthe United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was among47 people convicted ofterrorism-related charges whose execution set offa diplomatic row and escalated sectarian tensions.

Saudi Foreign Ministry spokesman Osama Naqli accused Tehran offailing tointervene inthe overnight attacks onSaudi diplomatic missions inIran.
