Irans president urges closer EU ties after JCPOA
TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran and the European Union should take the opportunities for the enhancement of relations in all fields brought by a comprehensive nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In a meeting with President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz in Tehran on Saturday, President Rouhani said Iran and Europe can tap into the atmosphere in the post-JCPOA and post-sanctions era to expand their economic, trade, cultural and scientific relations.

He was referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a lasting deal between Iran and the six powers over Tehrans peaceful nuclear program. The deal, which was finalized on July 14 and officially adopted on October 18, will terminate all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran after coming into force.

Elsewhere in the meeting, the Iranian president called for cooperation with the European Union in the fight against terrorism in order to contribute to stability in the Middle East region.

For his part, Schulz described the JCPOA as a perfect opportunity to open up a new chapter in Iran-EU relations.

The German MEP also hailed Iran as a factor of stability in an instable region, voicing Europes enthusiasm for broadening relation with Tehran.

The European official has also held meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in his official visit to Tehran.
