Irans deputy FM in Belgium for talks on regional crises

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian is in the Belgian capital of Brussels to confer with the European Union on the ongoing crises in the Middle East, Syria in particular.

The Iranian official, who arrived in Brussels on Monday night, is scheduled to meet on Tuesday a number of EU authorities and discuss regional developments, particularly those in the war-torn Syria.

Earlier on Monday, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini had described Iran as a regional power that can have an influence in solving the conflict in Syria.

I will receive tomorrow (Tuesday) morning a visit by an Iranian delegation in Brussels, with whom we will start discussions on this, Mogherini added.

Before leaving Iran for Belgium, Amir Abdollahian and UN Undersecretary General Jan Eliasson exchange views on the latest efforts to resolve ongoing crises in Yemen and Syria.

At the meeting held in Tehran on Monday, Amir Abdollahian referred to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis, and said any initiative which includes a realistic approach and major comprising factors such as the Syrian nation, leadership, and serious campaign against terrorism would be more practical and comprehensive.

Eliasson, for his part, appreciated Tehran's constructive approach in interacting effectively with the UN representatives on Syria and Yemen.

Last year, Iran proposed a four-article plan for finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria, which was welcomed by the UN. Iranian officials say that plan has now been updated.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. In the past four years, more than 200,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Another 7.6 million are displaced inside Syria.
