Supreme Leader attends ceremony to commemorate victims of Mina tragedy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) A ceremony was held in Tehran on Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to those killed in a recent crush of Hajj pilgrims in Mina, Saudi Arabia.

The memorial service was attended by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, bereaved families of the victims, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larjani, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, and a number of other senior clerics and officials.

Tehrans Provisional Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Kazem Sediqi addressed the event, stressing that the Mina tragedy brought pain to the hearts of Muslims.

He added that the Saudis have the blood of the most innocent people on their hands.

Simultaneously, similar ceremonies were held across the country to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy whose bodies have been repatriated to the Islamic Republic.

On Saturday, the coffins of 104 Iranian victims, draped in the countrys flags, were transferred to Iran.

President Hassan Rouhani and a number of senior officials attended a ceremony to pay tribute as the bodies returned home.

114 more Iranian pilgrims who died in the September 24 tragic incident were repatriated on Sunday morning.

A total of 464 Iranians have lost their lives in the disaster in Mina, near Mecca, when performing religious rites.

The return of the bodies from Saudi Arabia came a few days after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei sent a clear message to the Saudi government.

Addressing a military ceremony on Wednesday, Imam Khamenei warned Riyadh that the slightest disrespect for the Iranian pilgrims or its failure to repatriate the bodies of victims will draw Irans severe and tough reaction".

The Islamic Republic of Iran has had respect for fraternity in the Islamic world up to now, showing self-restraint and Islamic politeness, Imam Khamenei noted.

Saudi rulers have come under heavy fire for their incompetence in handling the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
