Opponents of Iran nuclear deal defeated in US Senate vote

Democrats defeated a disapproval resolution opposing the Iran nuclear agreement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US Senate Democrats defeated 58-42 a resolution of disapproval opposing the Iran nuclear agreement through a procedural maneuver on Thursday, ensuring the successful US implementation of the deal.

The party leaders in the Senate failed to agree on the vote threshold for passing a resolution of disapproval.

The disagreement prompted Democratic Leader Harry Reid to call on the supporters of the Iran deal to block the resolution from coming to the floor of the Senate for a final vote.

By Tuesday morning, it was clear that President Barack Obama had garnered enough support in the Senate to approve the agreement on limiting Irans nuclear program and lifting sanctions on the country.

However, The House of Representatives must still vote on the agreement. Despite the de facto approval of the deal by the Senate, Speaker of the House John Boehner is planning to take measures to delay the final vote in the House.
