Obama on brink of victory for Iran nuclear deal

US Senators Chris Coons and Bob Casey both declared their support for the Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday, bringing the number of backers in the Senate only one vote short of the support needed to sustain a presidential veto over congressional opposition to the agreement.
WASHINGTON, (Sputnik) Coons, a member ofthe Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced his decision atthe University ofDelaware onTuesday, according toa press release fromhis office.

US President Barack Obama needs 34 Senators tosupport the deal toensure that its opponents lack the two-thirds majority they would need tooverride any presidential veto onlegislation tokill it. Congress is expected tovote beforea September 17 deadline.

Since the deal was announced, Senator Coons has attended more thana dozen classified briefings and hearings regarding the deal and met withconstituents soliciting their input beforemaking his decision.

Coons said that while the deal is not perfect, he would support this agreement and vote againstany measures todisapprove it inCongress.

Meanwhile, Casey said he agreed that the nuclear is the best option possible forUS negotiators.
This agreement will substantially constrain the Iranian nuclear program or its duration, and compared withall realistic alternatives, it is the best option available tous atthis time," he wrote inan 8,000-word memorandum reported bythe Philadelphia Inquirer.

With the two lawmakers support, 33 members ofthe Senate now support the agreement, while 42 Senators opposed it and 14 are undecided.

That means that the administration has only tolock downa single additional Senator toensure the agreement will be approved.
