Bashar Assad key element in Syria future: Iran diplomat

A senior Iranian diplomat saysSyrian President Bashar al-Assad should be part of any solution to ongoing crisis in hiscountry.

We regard Mr. Bashar al-Assad as part of the solution in Syria and he is part of any political solution in the future of Syria, Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting with the United Nations special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday.

Amir-Abdollahian added that the Syrian president is instrumental in the settlement of the ongoingconflict in the Arab state.

He emphasized that Iran supports peace and stability in the region, saying,The fight against terrorists in the region and in Syria is important forIran and we believe that all of us should help Syria which is fighting against this dangerous phenomenon and within this framework, we regard the UN's role in the process of the fight on terrorism as important.
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that any solution to the crisis in Syria should be based on the Syrian peoples demand.

The UN envoy, for his part, said the international community attaches special importance to the fight against terrorism.

De Mistura added that Iran is among the influentialcountries in the region, which can play a leading role in helping settleregional problems.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.

The United Nations says the militancy has displaced more than 7.2 million Syrians internally, and compelled over four million others to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon.
