AEOI spokesman: Process to lift anti-Iran sanctions to start in October

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi announced that the process to terminate Western sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its peaceful nuclear energy program will start in late October.

90 days after the end of negotiations and the adoption of a resolution in the UN Security Council, namely late October, the legal process to review the nuclear agreement in Iran and members of the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) should end, Kamalvandi told the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

However, he noted, it is likely that the reviewing process will end 10 to 12 days sooner than the schedule due to certain considerations.

Kamalvandi added that the parties will then begin implementing their commitments under the nuclear deal, also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Earlier this month, Head of the AEOI Ali Akbar Salehi had said if everything goes according to plan and Tehran and six world powers meet their commitments, anti-Iran sanctions will be lifted by year end.

Iran and the Group 5+1 on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

The 159-page deal has its own opponents and proponents both in Iran and the other countries that are parties to the JCPOA, including the US.

While the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution to endorse the deal, the text of the document needs to be reviewed by both Irans Parliament and the US Congress.
