Tehran may play significant role in solving Syrian conflict - Politician

Qadri Jamil, a Syrian opposition leader, said that Iran has a serious influence in the region and on the Syrian regime, and could contribute to overcoming the crisis.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova Tehran has a significant influence in the region and could help reach a comprehensive solution of the inter-Syrian conflict, Qadri Jamil, a Syrian opposition leader, told Sputnik Wednesday.

"The Syrian opposition demanded that long ago, but Europe opposed [it]. Iran has a serious influence in the region and on the Syrian regime, and could contribute to overcoming the crisis," Jamil said.

Also Jamil stated that attempts by Western countries to apply a military solution to resolving the Syrian crisis have failed, prompting them to agree with the balanced approach toward the conflict promoted by Russia.
"The West and its allies tried to use force in the region, but it led only to a deterioration of the situation in Syria If all these players have come to a balanced, sensible approach, that is primarily because the attempts to solve the conflict by force have failed," Jamil said.

Such realization prompted the West to look for cooperation with Russia, which has long maintained that any positive results in Syria can only be achieved by way of the intra-Syrian dialogue.

"The European countries state their readiness and desire to cooperate with Russia in solving the crisis, as Russia has always had a firm, unwavering and clear position on the issue," Jamil added.

On Tuesday, Syrian President Bashar Assad said that Syria's trust in Russia remains high, as Moscow has proven its firm position in supporting Damascus during the military conflict.

Syria has been engulfed in a civil war since 2011. The countrys government is fighting a number of rebel groups as well as radical militant organizations, including the Nusra Front and the Islamic State terrorist group.

Earlier this week, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Britain should work with Iran and Russia to end the Syrian civil war.

Russia and Iran believe Syrian President Bashar Assad should form part of a political solution to the ongoing crisis, while the West has called for him to step down.
On Tuesday, Assad said that he was confident of the two countries support in ending the crisis.
