IRGC official: US unable to increase sanctions' pressures on Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Public Relations Department General Ramezan Sharif underlined that the world is against the US anti-Iran sanctions, and said that Washington can no longer increase the influence of its embargos on the Islamic Republic.

"The maximum pressure of sanctions is what has taken place so far and if the enemy could do anything else it would have done so by now," General Sharif said, addressing a meeting titled 'Studying Dimensions of Iran-US Confrontation in Era of Sacred Defense (the 1980-1988 US-backed Iraqi imposed war on Iran)' at FNA's Media Studies College in Tehran on Wednesday.

He reiterated that the international public opinion are against the US sanctions against Iran, and said, "Whenever the sanctions increase, the pressure also increase on the Americans, and not on us."

General Sharif pointed to the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the world powers, and stressed that in Iran there is a general consensus over what the country's nuclear stance should be.

He noted that the US and the West have already acknowledged their mistakes in using the pressure lever on Iran for the nuclear issue, and said, "This is a mistake that they themselves confess to it."

Earlier this month, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani deplored the Wests sanctions policy against Iran as a strategic mistake.

The policy of imposing sanctions against Iran by the West was a strategic mistake because such attempts could not make Iran give up pursuing its legitimate right to make a peaceful use of the nuclear know-how, Larijani said.

Larijani, meantime, criticized some countries superficial confrontation with terrorism, and said, International cooperation, including with the European Union, is needed for curbing this heinous phenomenon (terrorism) and we hope that the EU will play an effective role in this regard.

In late April, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei underlined that integrated national economic efforts, and not the nuclear talks between Tehran and the world powers, is the key to the removal of economic problems in the country.

"The key to the settlement of problems is not in Lausanne, Geneva and New York (that have hosted most rounds of Iran-powers nuclear talks), rather the key is in the country and all people should act upon their different responsibilities to strengthen domestic production as the only remedy for economic problems," Ayatollah Khamenei said, addressing thousands of Iranian workers on the occasion of the Labors Day in Iran.

He stressed inefficiency of the sanctions in impeding national moves and efforts as well as Iran's astonishing progress in the military industries, biotechnology, dam construction, nanotechnology, knowledge-based industries and nuclear energy, and said, "The pressure of embargoes was highly stronger in some of these arenas but they havent been able to create an obstacle on the path of the Iranians' efforts and progress."

Ayatollah Khamenei said paying attention and focusing on domestic production will also strengthen the feeling of national honor in addition to resolving economic problems, and added, "Reinvigoration of the internal power structure, including in economic fields, will strengthen the negotiators in any negotiation; otherwise, the other side will set preconditions continuously and utters nonsense and irrelevant remarks."
